The most famous cartoon stoners are, of course, Shaggy and Scooby Doo.
But they are far from the only cartoon characters who smoke weed.

Cartoon Stoner Characters
Many of these characters do not explicitly smoke weed, but it is implied. Others definitely light up and there is nothing left to speculation. If you prefer regular novels, I have a similar list of literary stoners entitled Cannabis in Literature.
Captain Cannabis
Captain Cannabis is the first cannabis-using superhero, dating back to the mid-1970s. His Canadian creator, Verne Andru, said in an interview that “Captain Cannabis is the first superhero dedicated to peace and love.” Despite being a stoner, he saves the Earth by encouraging people to be kind and loving to each other.
Scooby-Doo and Shaggy
Fans of the show Scooby-Doo Where Are You? speculate that ‘Scooby snacks’ are, in reality, snacks made with weed or cannabis. Weed users are often hungry, which is also the case with Shaggy and Scooby, indicating they could be stoners.
The show’s producers never actually showed the characters smoking but most fans believe that Shaggy often smoked inside their van called the Mystery Machine. That is also why he is never shown to drive it, since that would be highly irresponsible.
Cheshire Cat And The Caterpillar From Alice In Wonderland
The Cheshire Cat is always smiling as if high. This indicates that he is happy in the knowledge that he knows more than others (often the case with recreational marijuana users).
Similarly, the caterpillar is said to smoke the hookah. The hookah is an Eastern instrument that people use to smoke tobacco. When Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland, many drugs and illicit substances were legal. Authors like Conan Doyle and Carroll also knew about these drugs’ mind-expanding qualities.
While Carroll does not specify what the Caterpillar is smoking in his hookah, its “languidity” does suggest that it could be under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs.
Family Guy Characters
Many characters from the popular adult cartoon show Family Guy are known to use marijuana. The title of the 12th episode in the show’s seventh season is ‘420’. It is entirely dedicated to weed. (Brian the dog is arrested for weed possession and protests to get it legalized. He even sings the famous ‘Bag of Weed’ song.
Similarly, when Peter Griffin and Lois decide to participate in a talent show, they smoke marijuana for inspiration. Other Family Guy characters that are habitual weed users are old man John Herbert, Donna Tubbs-Brown, Bert, Sheila, and Cleveland Brown.
The Simpsons Characters
Homer Simpson starts smoking weed (episode Weekend at Burnsie’s) when he is prescribed medical marijuana for pain. He gets hooked on it and even earns a promotion when he laughs at his boss, Mr. Burn’s jokes.
The show’s producers wanted to highlight the issue of the legalization of marijuana and also depict both sides of the controversy.
Other Simpson characters who are stoners are Lisa Simpson (when she becomes the President), Hans Moleman, Krusty The Clown, Lenny Leonard, Carl Carlson, Otto Mann The Bus Driver, and Drederick Tatum.
Randy Marsh And Towelie From South Park
Randy S. Marsh from South Park is popular as ‘the weed guy’. In the episode Medicinal Fried Chicken, aired in March 2012, he deliberately gets testicular cancer so he can get prescription medicinal marijuana. Here, chicken is a slang term for cannabis.
Towelie is another character from South Park with a history of addiction to crack, crystal meth, cannabis, and heroin.
Beavis And Butthead
According to some forums, Beavis and Butthead were probably stoners although the producers of the show never explicitly showed them smoking weed or doing drugs. Also, MTV, where the show was aired, had a strict policy against depicting drug usage.
In one episode though, the two characters watch a video under the influence of nutmeg, which is a household spice known for its mild hallucinogenic properties. Likewise, in Beavis and Butthead Do America, the two get high on peyote (which is a cactus drug banned in the USA). They even huffed paint thinner in one episode.
Popeye
In the era during which the Popeye cartoon became popular, the term ‘spinach’ was used to refer to marijuana. Although the producers of the show do not explicitly state that the sailor uses marijuana, some fans believe that spinach is referring to weed. Also, Popeye sometimes smokes ‘spinach’ in his pipe.
Hermes Conrad
Hermes Conrad of Futurama is an avid marijuana smoker. He is a Jamaican who tries to buy weed from Thomas Jefferson. He even tries to legalize it.
In the episode titled Bender Should Not Be Allowed on Television, he tells his son Dwight not to smoke the ‘cigar’ which is “not a cigar” (indicating it could be a blunt). He even tries to “flush some things” before calling the police (after finding the professor murdered).
In another episode, Hermes discovers a strain of Omicronian marijuana which is so strong that he sends a team to procure it from another planet. He also states often that Jamaicans have “other hobbies” which is why the Jamaican athletic team may have gotten detained at the airport (hinting at marijuana possession).
Hulk
There is speculation that the Marvel character, Bruce Banner, a scientist who turns into Hulk, might be taking weed to remain calm (so he won’t turn into Hulk). There is even a hybrid strain of marijuana named Bruce Banner – which is a combination of Sativa and Indica that leaves users feeling ‘calmly energized’.
BoJack Horseman
BoJack Horseman is a washed-out TV star and a horse. He is shown to smoke weed in many episodes, including one where he parties during his Oscar nomination. Similarly, he admits to being stoned (to Sarah Lynn) while they eat all of Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane’s food.
Rick Sanchez
Rick from Rick and Morty is often shown smoking weed or doing some alien drugs. Many of the scenes are implied and the producers have not shown any explicit drug use.
The show also refers to heroin usage. In the early episodes, Rick is even shown to be an alcoholic but gets sober as the show progresses.
SpongeBob SquarePants
This popular kids’ cartoon series has several references to weed and drug usage. In the episode titled Code Yellow, SpongeBob asks his doctors to prescribe him some “medical sea chicken”. Chicken, as mentioned above, is a slang term for weed.
Mr. Krabs has a trailer with the sticker “I love weed” and the word “sea” is added over the word “weed”. SpongeBob also occasionally smokes bubble pipes.
Pot-Smoking Cartoon Characters: Final Thoughts
Do you agree that these cartoon stoner characters are memorable? Are there any other cartoon stoners that were missing from this list?
Please feel free to let me know in a comment below. I don’t know all that much about cartoons, especially the more modern ones, so I am sure there are a lot of characters I missed. And I would love to add some more great ones.
