The 10 Best Strains For Maximum Yield
If you are looking to maximize yields, the first step is to choose one of these high-yielding strains. If you prefer to grow autoflowers, I also have an article that lists the highest-yielding autoflower strains.
Afghani Bullrider (a.k.a. Bullrider)
Afghani Bullrider is a high-yield strain, whether you grow it indoors or outdoors. This pure-Indica strain can be harvested once it is about 1 meter tall and yields 500 grams per square meter (indoors). Outdoors, you can get similar yields from two or three well-cultivated bushes about 2 meters tall.
The Afghani Bullrider strain matures around late October or early November. It is a beautiful, relatively short plant that prefers a Mediterranean-like climate but also does well in the heat.
All in all, the Afghani Bullrider is a great strain for growers looking for a stable, high yield.
AK-47
AK-47 is a 65/35 sativa-dominant hybrid. It was derived from Colombian, Mexican, Thai, and Afghani parent plants. It contains 1% CBD and 13-20% THC.
This high-yield strain is the winner of no less than 16 awards, including the High Times Cannabis Cup (third place, in 2011) and the Barcelona High Life Cup winner (hash, 2005).
AK-47 is an easy strain to grow both indoors and outdoors. It usually flowers within 8-9 weeks. When grown indoors, it can produce 400-500 grams per square meter.
The AK-47 strainโs beautiful buds are extremely aromatic but that intense odor can be problematic if you are trying to keep your grow discrete.
Northern Lights
Northern Lights is an iconic Indica-dominant strain. It is celebrated for its high THC content, often ranging between 16% and 21%.
The popular strain originates from the Afghani and Thai landrace parent plants and combines their robust genetics.
Growers love Northern Lights for its manageable size, which typically reaches 3 to 4 feet indoors. This makes it ideal to grow in space-constrained environments. It flourishes well in hydroponic systems or rich soil.
You can expect a generous yield of about 18 ounces per square meter indoors and up to 22 ounces per plant outdoors. The flowering period lasts 6 to 8 weeks, with harvest usually occurring after 8 to 10 weeks.
All in all, Northern Lights is known for its resilience and ease of cultivation. It has earned numerous awards including the High Times Cannabis Cup three times, in 1989, 1990, and 1992. It is the strain I always recommend for first-time growers, too.
Gorilla Glue
Gorilla Glue #4, also known as GG4, is a potent hybrid strain. It is known for its high THC levels, often reaching 25% to 30%.
GG4 is a cross between Chem’s Sister, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel. It has won numerous awards, including the Cannabis Cup (Michigan and Los Angeles) and the High Times Jamaican World Cup.
GG4 is a favorite for its balanced effects and sticky buds. Indoors, it yields about 18 ounces per square meter, while outdoors, it can produce up to 21 ounces per plant.
It takes about 8 to 9 weeks to flower, with harvest usually occurring around 9 to 10 weeks. Gorilla Glue #4 is known for its fast growth and it thrives in soil as well as hydroponics.
Super Silver Haze
Shantibaba, one of the top breeders in Holland in the 1990s and the co-owner of Mr. Nice Seed Bank, developed this popular strain. He used the genetics of three stellar strains – the Skunk, Northern Lights, and Haze to produce it.
Super Silver Haze has won multiple cannabis competitions, including the first prize in the High Times Grand Cup in 1998.
The high-yield strain thrives in hydroponics but can also be grown in soil. Successful harvests produce yields of around 19 oz per square meter (800 gram/meter square) indoors and 15 oz. per plant outdoors. Flowering takes 10-11 weeks and harvests come around mid-October.
Big Bud
Big Bud is a classic strain and a Cannabis Cup winner in 1989. Its yield is legendary and it is known to produce massive flowers. Big Bud has thick central stalks and quickly grows to over 5 feet.
You can expect yields in the range of 25 ounces per plant outdoors and nearly 20 ounces per square meter indoors. Big Bud is ready to harvest within 50-65 days. It is an easy-to-grow strain that thrives in pretty much every environment.
Amnesia Haze
Amnesia Haze is an 80/20 sativa dominant hybrid. It comes from South Asian and Jamaican Landrace parent plants. Amnesia Haze was the Cannabis Cup winner in 2004 and 2012. It contains 20-22% THC.
This highly popular strain flowers in 12 weeks. It has a yield of 600 to 650 grams per square meter indoors and 700 grams per plant outdoors.
Amnesia Haze grows quickly and vigorously. It is resistant to pests and many growers use it as a mother plant for cuttings.
Aurora Indica
Aurora Indica is a 90/10 Indica-dominant strain with nearly 14-19% THC. Its parent plants are Afghani and Northern Lights.
Aurora Indica is quite popular with growers, because it is resistant to mold and pests. It flowers for 9-12 weeks and produces yields in the range of 14 ounces per plant outdoors and 10-14 ounces/per square meter indoors.
Since these plants are relatively short, they are ideal for indoor growing using the Sea of Green (SoG) method.
Sweet Moby (a.k.a. Moby Dick or Moby)
Sweet Moby, also known as the Moby Dick strain, is a Sativa-dominant hybrid with Haze and White Widow as parent strains. Just like a whale out of the water, this strain is characterized by huge buds in pale green and deep blue hues.
Moby is especially known for its high yield. It is also relatively easy to grow and skyrockets to 3 meters tall within a short frame of time. You can expect impressive yields of up to 23 ounces per square meter indoors and over 53 ounces per plant outdoors.
Critical Kush
Critical Kush is an 80% Indica dominant strain. It was bred from Critical Mass and OG Kush and has a THC content of 18% to 25%, which provides powerful relaxation. This strain has won many awards, including the Spannabis Champions Cup in 2015 (in the Indoors/Hydroponics category).
Critical Kush is best grown indoors, in soil or in a hydroponic setup. It usually reaches heights of around 3 feet and its flowering period is 8 to 10 weeks. You can expect harvest after 9 to 10 weeks.
The indoor yield can reach 21 ounces per square meter, while outdoor yields are about 23 ounces per plant. Critical Kushโs compact size and high resin production make it popular among growers.
