I have no choice.
I have to begin this cooking with cannabis article with a recipe for cannabutter.
It is the base that allows you to make all sorts of baked goods containing weed.
Having that one recipe opens up a world of delicious food to get you stoned.
But we’re not stopping there.
I’ve got six other recipes, including some savory ones and even a tea.

7 Delicious Edible Recipes
As mentioned, we’re going to begin with a cannabutter recipe. If you’ve ever tried to make this but it turned out weak, welcome to the club. My first attempts barely had any effect. It turns out the key to making DIY cannabis-infused edibles is decarboxylation.
Cannabis Butter (Cannabutter)
Cannabis butter or cannabutter – as the name implies – is a cannabis-infused butter. I realize it’s not a complete dish on its own (at least not for most people), but it is a staple in the kitchen and you can use it to make many other edibles like brownies and cookies.
Cannabutter offers the same medicinal benefits as weed and is a great smoke-free option. Many cancer patients have been known to benefit from cannabutter for pain relief and as a sleep aid.
While cannabis-infused butter is readily available in shops and dispensaries in places where weed is legal, you can easily make it at home.
As mentioned, you do need to decarboxylate the weed first. Decarboxylation activates the CBD and THC in the weed so you can enjoy its psychoactive effects.
As I said, I remember trying to make edibles back in college and not wondering why they ended up so weak. I did not decarb my weed first. Now that I know how to do it, I consider edibles one of the best ways to consume marijuana.
Ingredients
- 1/2 ounce (14 grams) of decarboxylated weed
- 2 sticks or (225 grams) of butter
- 2 cups (or 500 ml) of water
Instructions
- Boil the water and add the butter sticks
- Once melted, add the cannabis
- Cover and cook for an hour- stir every once in a while.
- Strain the mixture using a cheesecloth.
- Cool for an hour before using.
Alice B. Toklas’s Famous Hashish Fudge Recipe
Alice B. Toklas needs no introduction. For the uninitiated, she was an American-born Parisian, better known as the partner of famous author Gertrude Stein. She also wrote her famous cookbook, The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook, which features this popular Hashish Fudge recipe.
Toklas describes the hashish fudge in the following words: “Anyone can whip these up on a rainy day. They are ideal for warding off the common cold. Eat them with caution, though; two small balls the size of a walnut are enough. They will elicit euphoria and storms of laughter!”

- Pulverize the spices and cannabis in a mortar
- Chop and mix the nuts and dried fruits

Cannabis Hummus Recipe
This is a delicious dip that everyone enjoys. You can have it with nachos, pita bread, or vegetables.
Ingredients
- 1 can (400g) of garbanzo beans, drained and well-rinsed
- 5-6 garlic cloves
- Ground cumin – ½ tsp

Instructions
- Remove the outer covering of the beans.

- Add the ice cubes on top before blending, for a smoother hummus. If needed, mix in some ice-cold water to adjust the consistency.

Cannabis Gummies
Weed gummies are one of the most popular edibles. Not only are they discrete, but they are also easy to transport. The following weed gummy recipe is super simple and needs just 5 ingredients. Just make sure to keep them out of the reach of children!
Ingredients
- Cold water and cannabis-infused oil – ½ cup each
- Flavored Jello – 1 sachet
- Unflavored gelatin powder – 2 tbsp
- Soy lecithin – ½ tsp.
Instructions
- In a saucepan over low heat, boil the water, cannabis oil, and soy lecithin.
- Stir continuously until melted, then add the gelatin powder.
- Continue stirring as you heat the mixture on low heat for 10-15 minutes.
- Don’t boil the mixture. Doing so could prevent it from setting properly.
- Once you see white foam on the top, turn off the heat.
- Using a dropper, fill up gummy molds while the mixture is still hot and liquid.
- Allow to set at room temperature for 6-8 hours or in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Once frozen, air dry on parchment paper.
Cannabis ‘High’ Tea
This is a wonderful ‘high’ tea recipe. Make sure to use decarboxylated weed for this recipe; otherwise, you won’t experience its psychoactive effects.
Ingredients
- 3 cups water
- 2 tablespoons, or 28 grams, of cannabutter
- ½ gram of ground decarboxylated marijuana
Instructions
- In a pot, add 2 cups of water and bring to a boil
- Next, add the cannabutter and boil for a few minutes. Add a bit of water as it evaporates.
- Next, add ½ gram of marijuana to the mixture and boil for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. You may need to add more water if required.
- Strain the tea and enjoy.
Note that cannabis tea can take several hours to kick in, but its effects tend to be more intense and also last longer (as compared to smoking marijuana).
Cooking With Cannabis: Final Thoughts
Hopefully having a set of recipes to work with will help you avoid all the mistakes I made in my first attempts at cooking with cannabis. But I have a good excuse. Back then, the internet was just starting, so you couldn’t just search for edibles recipes to follow.
You just had to start cooking and learn the hard way how bad you were at it. Have you tried to cook with weed before, either following a recipe or not? How did it go? Which one of the recipes above do you most want to try? I’ve always loved grilled cheese sandwiches, so that one is definitely my favorite.
