Cannabis Storage GuideI’m sure you’ve noticed this.

When you first get some weed, it tastes amazing.

It is slightly moist, breaks apart easily and smokes perfectly.

But after a while, it becomes dry and crumbly.

It no longer tastes as good and its effects are also diminished.

But it does not have to be that way.

Paying attention to cannabis storage makes all the difference.

Sure you could just smoke your weed faster so that it does not have a chance to lose its freshness. But why not learn how to store weed properly, so you can always have fresh tasty weed to smoke?

Ultimate Cannabis Storage Guide

Cannabis storage is important because, without proper storage, it can degrade quickly. Cannabis can degrade due to exposure to air, light, and heat.

  • Air causes the cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis to oxidize, reducing its potency and flavor.
  • Light, especially UV rays, can also break down THC, making it less effective.
  • Heat accelerates these processes and causes the cannabis to dry out and lose its aroma and potency.

Best Practices When Storing Marijuana

The key to a long-lasting stash is storing your weed under the ideal environmental conditions. This means keeping it within a specific temperature and humidity range.

In addition to the correct environment, there are a number of other measures to take to ensure your weed stays fresh as long as possible. We will go over them now, beginning with the ideal temperature and humidity.

Ideal Temperature For Storing Marijuana

Always store your weed at a temperature below 70ยฐ F. The optimum cannabis storage temperature range is between 60ยฐ and 68ยฐ F. Temperatures above 70ยฐ F can damage your cannabis.

Excessive heat causes the terpenes to evaporate or break down, resulting in a loss of flavor, potency, and aroma. Similarly, exposure to frost can modify the weedโ€™s terpene composition and negatively influence the weedโ€™s flavor.

Ideal Humidity

The optimum humidity range for cannabis storage is between 59% and 63% relative humidity. Overly dry cannabis can cause cannabinoid degradation, lowering the weedโ€™s potency while also negatively impacting its taste.

On the other hand, too much moisture can lead to mold and mildew growth. It also damages the cannabinoids and, subsequently, the weedโ€™s taste and safety.

Choose The Right Containers For Cannabis Storage

When it comes to the material of the storage containers for storing your cannabis, glass is a clear winner over plastic.

Plastic containers are porous and they tend to dry out the flowers. Dried flowers result in harsher smoke. Exposure to oxygen also causes the THC in the weed to convert into CBN, which provides a less potent cannabis experience.

Moreover, plastic can also leech carcinogenic chemicals like BPA (bisphenol A) into your cannabis. Furthermore, the static from the plastic can also burn the trichomes in cannabis, resulting in a loss of flavor and potency.

Glass containers are generally food-safe and do not leach harmful chemicals or odors into the weed.

When you choose high-quality airtight glass containers, they prevent oxygen from drying out the flowers. This retains their THC content so you get a richer cannabis experience. Glass containers are also 100% recyclable and reusable, which also makes them eco-friendly.

Benefits Of Airtight Glass Containers For Cannabis Storage
  • Airtight glass containers preserve the flavor and freshness of your flowers
  • They are mostly UV resistant and can keep almost all light out.
  • Some glass containers also come with color-coded lids so you can organize and store your stash based on the different cannabis products, storage dates, etc.

This is my recommendation for a great glass container that is also reasonably priced:

It is anti-static, UV-protective, and has an air-tight seal to keep your stash fresh for months.

Use Humidity Packs

Humidity packs help maintain your cannabisโ€™ freshness longer by preserving its moisture content and maintaining its cannabinoids and terpenes. These are my favorites:

They are easy to use. You only need to drop one into your stash jar. Some humidity packs last for weeks, although some high-quality ones can last for years before needing replacement.

Some glass containers even come with space in the lid where you can add your humidity packs. This is my favorite, though I personally just use containers without the dedicated space:

Avoid Light Exposure

When cannabis is exposed to light, it can trigger oxidation in the buds. Oxidation reduces the weedโ€™s potency and flavor and can also result in unwanted flavors seeping into it. That is why you must store your weed in an airtight glass container in a cool, dark place.

It is best to store cannabis in air-tight jars in a drawer, closet, or cabinet, away from other food items. A closet is ideal for cannabis storage since it is opened a lot less than drawers or cabinets, reducing the airflow.

Long-Term Cannabis Storage

If you are planning to store your weed for a longer time period, it may make sense to look into some of the following options. But consider them carefully, because they do have drawbacks.

Vacuum-Seal Your Cannabis

If you plan to transport your weed, you may vacuum-seal it. It is best not to vacuum-seal weed when storing it at home. This is because vacuum sealing has several downsides.

  • Firstly, over-vacuuming can make the cannabis buds hard, almost like a brick-like consistency.
  • Secondly, over-vacuuming can also crush the delicate buds.
  • While vacuum sealing helps prevent things from entering and coming out of the sealed bags, it also prevents the buds from breathing and restricts important moisture exchanges. This can significantly impact the weedโ€™s trichomes’ quality and, subsequently, its potency and taste.

To avoid these issues, it is important that you cure the buds properly first and only then vacuum-seal them. It is also important that you use a vacuum sealer machine with a button so you can control how much air is sucked out. This is important to prevent crushing the buds.

Refrigerate Or Freeze Your Weed

Refrigerating or freezing cannabis has some downsides. Mainly, temperature and humidity fluctuations can increase the risk of mold formation. Therefore, only freeze your cannabis if it is absolutely necessary.

The plus side of freezing is that it can keep your stash safe for up to two years.

When freezing cannabis, pay attention to its storage. Use a vacuum jar or any airtight glass container without a static charge. Pack the buds tightly and seal the jar properly. Then, place the stash in the freezer for long-term storage.

When ready to use, remove the necessary amount from the freezer and let it thaw. Avoid touching the delicate trichomes while they are thawing.

Additional Cannabis Storage Tips

  • Regularly check your cannabis for signs of degradation: Fresh weed wonโ€™t crumble or feel spongy. If it does, it has been sitting too long and has probably degraded. Avoid using weed that smells and tastes harsh, appears too dry, or has mold on it.
  • Keep different strains separate: Do not cross-contaminate the flavors and aromas.
  • Handle the cannabis minimally and with extreme care: The trichomes can degrade over time, so avoid handling the weed too much.

Common Cannabis Storage Mistakes To Avoid

  • Avoid over-exposure to air, light, and heat: To minimize air exposure, store cannabis in airtight containers placed in minimally used closets. Avoid frequently opening the container. If needed, use vacuum-sealed jars or bags to ensure a tight seal.
  • Avoid inappropriate containers: This includes plastic containers, which may leach chemicals into your stash and reduce the weedโ€™s freshness.
  • Avoid fluctuations in humidity and temperature: Use humidity packs and keep the cannabis storage containers in a cool, dark place.

Cannabis Storage Guide: Final Thoughts

Proper cannabis storage is essential to maintain the potency, flavor, and overall quality of your stash. That is why cannabis packaging has evolved so much over the years.

By understanding the detrimental effects of air, light, and heat, and implementing best practices such as maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels, using airtight glass containers, and incorporating humidity packs, you can significantly extend the shelf life of your cannabis.

Avoid common storage mistakes and regularly check your stash for signs of degradation to further ensure that your cannabis remains fresh and enjoyable. By following these guidelines, you can preserve the integrity of your cannabis and enjoy a superior experience every time.
