My friends and I watched a lot of stoner comedies back in college.
We had two favorites that we watched over and over again.
Both made this list of the best stoner movies of all time.
But that does not necessarily mean they are my favorites anymore.
Many of the movies on the list had not been released yet when I was in college.
And some of the older movies simply hadnโt made it onto my radar.
The bottom line is that every single one of the weed comedies listed below is a great movie to watch when high. Letโs check them out.
Best Stoner Movies Of All Time
These stoner comedies are not listed in any particular order. In other words, I did not want to present them from โbestโ to โworstโ, since that is subjective and all are enjoyable anyway.
If youโre curious about which two movies my friends and I kept watching in college, Iโll let you know in the conclusion at the end of the article. And if youโre looking for documentaries, youโll find them in our list of the best documentaries about cannabis.
Grandmaโs Boy
Grandmaโs Boy (2006) is a stoner comedy directed by Nicholaus Goossen and produced by Adam Sandler. It stars Allen Covert, Peter Dante, Jonah Hill, Linda Cardellini, Shirley Jones, and Doris Roberts
It is a classic stoner movie depicting the frequent use of pot, drinking, nudity, sex, rude language, and absurd situations. The movie is about Alex (played by Allen Covert), a 35-year-old video game tester who is forced to move in with his grandmother and her two eccentric roommates after being evicted.
The elderly ladies put a damper on Alexโs social life and his pot-smoking ways. While some critics were not impressed with this movie, it achieved cult status among stoners.
The Stoned Age
Another rocker stoner comedy set in the 1970s, The Stoned Age (1994) is a film directed by James Melkonian. It stars Michael Kopelow, Bradford Tatum, Clifton Collins Jr., and Renee Griffin Lanie among others.
Two high-school slackers, Joe and Hubbs, smoke large amounts of marijuana and embark on a hilarious misadventure in search of chicks. Although it is a pretty lame-brain film, The Stoned Age has plenty of moments that are sure to get you crying with laughter! The dialogue is also hilarious, which makes it worth watching over and over.
Pineapple Express
Pineapple Express (2008) is a popular buddy stoner film about a pot-smoking process server named Dale Denton, played by Seth Rogen, and his dealer Saul Silver (James Franco).
While high on a rare strain of cannabis called Pineapple Express, the duo happens to witness a murder. David Gordon Green directed this classic stoner comedy full of humor revolving around cannabis usage.
True Romance
True Romance (1993) has a star-studded cast yet remains one of the most underrated films ever. The film has inspired other stoner comedies, including Pineapple Express above. It stars A-listers like Christian Slater, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, and Christopher Walken.
Christian Slater plays a nerdy character who falls in love with a hooker played by Arquette. The young couple ends up killing her pimp and stealing his bag of cocaine. They escape and hope to sell the drugs but soon the mob is after them.
Cheech & Chongs Up in Smoke
Cheech & Chongs Up In Smoke is also referred to simply as Up in Smoke. It is a 1978 American stoner comedy directed by Lou Adler and stars Cheech Marin as Pedro De Pacas and Tommy Chong as Anthony Man Stillman.
The drug-ingesting duo is arrested for marijuana possession and after being released on a technicality, they continue their misadventures and even take part in a rock contest.
Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle
Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle is a buddy stoner comedy directed by Danny Leiner. The 2004 film stars John Cho as Harold and Kal Penn as Kumar.
The duo gets stoned one evening while watching TV. They are utterly mesmerized by a commercial for White Castle sliders (burgers) and set out (late at night) in search of one.
Their night is filled with misadventures as they get in trouble with rednecks, cops, and even a car-jacking criminal named Neil Patrick Harris (played by Neil Patrick Harris).
The movie was so popular, it even got two sequels. While they are also worth a watch if you like stoner comedies, the original movie in the series is definitely the best one.
The Big Lebowski
The Big Lebowski is a cult stoner classic known for its quirky characters, comedic dream sequences, and memorable dialog. The 1998 comedy was written and directed by the talented Coen brothers Ethan and Joel. It stars Jeff Bridges in the lead and is about a case of mistaken identity that leads to some hilarious situations.
Half Baked
Half Baked is not just a stoner movie. It is also a movie about friendship. Three lifelong stoner buddies step up for their fourth mate who is arrested for killing a diabetic police horse after accidentally feeding it junk food. To raise bail, they have to sell drugs stolen from a pharmaceutical lab.
The 1998 film stars Dave Chappelle, Jim Breuer, Harland Williams, and Guillermo Dรญaz and was directed by Tamra Davis. I have a personal connection with this movie in that my friends and I watched it many, many times while in college (and while high, of course).
Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates
This 2016 stoner film is based on the real-life story of hard-partying brothers Mike and Dave Stangle who became famous after posting a funny ad on Craigslist looking for wedding dates. Zac Efron stars as Dave while Adam DeVine plays Mike, Daveโs older brother. The movie also stars Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza and was directed by Jake Szymanski.
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a 1998 film based on the book of the same name, written by Hunter S. Thompson. The two protagonists landed a spot on my list of the most iconic literary characters who smoke weed.
Like the novel, the movie depicts a copious use of drugs, rebellion against society, and the disillusionment of the American Dream during the post-Vietnam War and Nixon era.
It stars Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro in the lead roles and was directed by Terry Gilliam. Great acting, stunning visuals, and sick twisted sequences make it one of the best stoner films of all time.
How High
How High is a 2001 comedy film starring Method Man and Redman. It was directed by Jesse Dylan, marking his first movie.
The story follows two guys who smoke their dead friendโs ashes, only to see his ghost. With the ghostโs help, they ace their exams and get scholarships to Harvard University. However, once their supply of the โsupernatural smokeโ is exhausted, they have to rely on their intelligence to make the grade.
Super Troopers
This is a great all-time favorite stoner movie. It is a cannabis cult classic directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, who also stars in it alongside Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Kevin Heffernan, and Eric Stolhanske.
Super Troopersโ plot revolves around five misfit and incompetent state troopers who set out on an agenda to stop drug trafficking to keep their jobs. The same team made Beerfest, which is just as funny.
At the end of Beerfest, they tease the soon-to-come release of Potfest, which has a good shot of landing on this list itself. Unfortunately, it is now 18 years later and we are still waitingโฆ
Dude, Whereโs My Car?
Dude, Whereโs My Car is one of the funniest American stoner films, although it has received some mixed reviews. People either loved it or hated it.
Starring Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott, the plot revolves around two stoned friends who, after a night of hard partying, cannot remember where they parked their car. Their search leads to some rather funny situations. Dude, Whereโs My Car is directed by Danny Leiner.
Dazed And Confused
Dazed and Confused is another movie I watched quite often when I was in college. It was directed by Richard Linklater and released in 1993. It is a coming-of-age comedy that perfectly captures the essence of teenage life in the 1970s, which obviously includes copious amounts of marijuana.
Set on the last day of high school in 1976, the film follows a group of Texas teenagers as they navigate parties, hazing rituals, and the uncertainties of their future. The ensemble cast includes early performances from future stars like Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, and Parker Posey.
What makes Dazed and Confused a quintessential stoner film is its laid-back atmosphere, memorable characters, and themes of rebellion and youth culture.
The movie features plenty of marijuana use, but itโs more than just a film about getting high. Itโs a nostalgic trip that resonates with audiences of all ages, perfectly capturing the feeling of endless summer nights and the carefree attitude of youth.
It also features an iconic soundtrack full of 1970s rock classics, in addition to some incredibly quotable dialogue and an authentic portrayal of teen life. It is no surprise that Dazed and Confused has achieved cult status and continues to be a favorite among stoner movie enthusiasts.
Funny Weed Movies To Watch While High: Final Thoughts
I mentioned in the introduction that the two movies my friends and I watched the most in college both made this list of the best stoner movies of all time. In case you are curious, they are Half Baked and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.
I am also a big fan of Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle, but that movie came out a few years after I graduated from college. If it had been released when I was in college, I have no doubt it would have displaced Half Baked as our preferred comedy when high.
What do you think of this list? Are there any weed films you feel I missed? Or are there any on this list that you feel do not deserve to be here? Please feel free to let me know in the comments below. I will be adding to this list in future updates and any good suggestions you have will definitely end up in the article eventually.

I always loved Dazed and Confused. Jay and Silent Bob Strikes back. My gramaโs fave was always Harold and Kumar though, she introduced me to Cheech and Chong.

I forgot about Dazed and Confused! Definitely need to add that one. Itโs one of my favorites, too. And I agree with your grandma about Harold and Kumar. Thatโs actually probably my favorite of all the movies on this list. Maybe tied with Fear and Loathing.
