More and more countries are legalizing weed.
Or at least decriminalizing it.
That means an ever-growing list of travel destinations where you can freely light up.
Of course, more choices does make it harder to decide on a single destination.
That’s why I decided to make a list of the most scenic cannabis-friendly travel destinations.
These are all places full of natural beauty and/or manmade beauty.
And they are places where you can smoke marijuana without the risk of jail time.
Most Scenic Cannabis-Friendly Travel Destinations
As mentioned, these destinations are all beautiful in some way. Some of them have stunning natural beauty, while others have incredible historic sights. Most have plenty of both.
Netherlands
The Netherlands is a beautiful and scenic travel destination due to its picturesque canals, tulip fields, windmills, and charming villages.
It is home to picturesque cities like Amsterdam, famous for its red-light area, electric nightlife, museums, canals, cheese, beer, and cobbled streets.
Most cities in the Netherlands also have flat terrain, making it perfect for cycling. Its blend of historic architecture and modern design adds to its charm.
Cannabis is legal for personal use in the Netherlands. Tourists can buy and use it in licensed coffee shops. Out of the 443 municipalities in the Netherlands, at least 100 have these weed-selling coffee shops. Tourists can safely buy cannabis from these coffee shops right off the menu.
Canada
Canada is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It has vibrant cities that offer diverse dining options and exciting urban experiences.
In the west, you have a beautiful backdrop of mountains and the Pacific Ocean. In the east, you have gorgeous cities like Montreal, Quebec, Toronto, and Halifax.
These feature gorgeous cobblestone streets and centuries-old buildings. In addition to natural wonders like national parks and the Niagara Falls, Canada also has exciting festivals and the captivating Northern Lights.
A tourist traveling to Canada can also legally buy and consume marijuana in accordance with federal and provincial laws. Cities like Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario also let you smoke weed anywhere. Tourists may carry cannabis edibles, CBD oil, CBD extracts, and other CBD products when traveling to this beautiful country.
Spain
Spain is home to some of the most beautiful places in the world. From shimmering Mediterranean beaches to serene countryside to buzzing nightlife- Spain has it all. It is even home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it attractive to tourists.
Spain has some confusing laws regarding weed use. It is decriminalized for personal cultivation and use but illegal for trade. It is also legal to carry about 100 grams of cannabis for personal use. Members can also buy cannabis from Spanish cannabis clubs and licensed weed dealers.
Germany
Germany features breathtaking mountain views with Alpine peaks, serene lakes, and verdant forests. Its terrain includes enchanting forests and quaint little towns adorned with timbered houses.
The country is home to exquisite man-made wonders, such as white Rococo churches and magnificent castles. This combination of natural and architectural beauty makes Germany remarkably scenic and an attractive tourist spot.
For cannabis lovers, the country has the most liberal cannabis laws in Europe, similar to those in Malta and Luxembourg. It was one of the first major European countries to make weed legal for personal and recreational use. Tourists over the age of 18 can also carry 25 grams of dried cannabis for personal use.
Malta
Malta is a beautiful country with natural caverns, cliffs, and rock formations. It packs glorious variety into its small archipelago. You will find pre-historic temples, hidden coves, and fossil-studded cliffs.
Even if you are in Malta for a short time, a simple ferry journey across the Grand Harbor in Valetta is sure to provide you with a magical experience.
In 2021, the country became Europeโs first to legalize adult-use cannabis. It has some of the most weed-friendly laws and its relaxed policies allow residents to possess and grow certain amounts of cannabis without the fear of prosecution. You can also buy high-THC cannabis from a pharmacy, provided you have a valid narcotics prescription.
Denmark
Denmark has something for everyone, whether you are a nature lover or someone who prefers buzzing cities. Hike through its verdant woods, kayak on calm fjords, or explore the countryโs diverse nightlife.
Denmark’s natural beauty and historic sites like Amalienborg and Rosenborg Castle are tourist must-visits. Cycle through the beautiful countryside or simply enjoy the peace of the Danish Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Since the 1960s, cannabis products have been sold in certain areas of Denmark, like Pusher Street in Christiana. However, cops conduct regular checks there, so it is best to be careful. Note that the Danish Narcotic Substances Act makes it illegal to grow, sell, buy, and process cannabis, but it is not illegal for personal use.
United States Of America
We will focus on two specific states here: Alaska and Colorado. But there are many other beautiful states where cannabis is legal, like California, Washington, Oregon and more.
Alaska is known for its stunning natural beauty and features vast wilderness, majestic mountains, and serene glaciers. The Northern Lights add a magical touch to the Alaskan skies.
Alaskaโs national parks and abundant wildlife make it a paradise for nature lovers. Marijuana is legal in Alaska and anyone over the age of 21 can possess or consume it.
Colorado is another cannabis-friendly state known for its breathtaking scenery. It has the famous Rocky Mountains with scenic landscapes, lush forests, and picturesque valleys. The state is also famous for its ski resorts and outdoor activities. Colorado’s vibrant cities and charming small towns add to its appeal.
Cannabis has been legal in Colorado for medical use since 2000 and for recreational use since late 2012. Anyone over the age of 21 is allowed to possess or consume marijuana.
Switzerland
Switzerland is renowned for its stunning scenic beauty, majestic Alpine peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and lush green valleys. Its picturesque villages, historic cities, and pristine landscapes make it a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
The country announced its plans to legalize the sale and consumption of weed in Zurich in March 2023. Amid a pilot project, the countryโs health authority also approved the establishment of Europeโs first legal adult-use cannabis dispensary. For medicinal use, cannabis is legal in Switzerland for special cases such as pain relief in cancer patients.
Thailand
Thailand is another weed-friendly country with booming medicinal cannabis tourism, though some of its leaders and politicians worry it could get out of hand. It is the first Asian country to legalize weed, making it a somewhat unexpected country to have legalized marijuana.
Thailand is also known for its scenic beauty, thanks to its stunning beaches, lush jungles, and historic temples. You can legally enjoy weed here while exploring its natural and cultural attractions. You can relax on tropical beaches, wander through its vibrant cities, and discover beautiful nature spots, enhancing your experience with marijuana.
Most Beautiful Cannabis-Friendly Countries: Final Thoughts
If you are looking for a scenic cannabis-friendly destination for your next trip, every single one of the countries above fits the bill. Which one is best for you depends on what you like to do on vacation, your current location, and your budget. Language may play a role, too.
If you want to head to some other destination to toke up, make sure it is safe to do so wherever you go. As a first step, you can read this article listing the countries where you do not want to be caught smoking weed.
Personally, I have visited all of these countries, except Malta. However, none of them had legalized cannabis while I was there. I did still partake, but I had to be careful. I would love to go back and enjoy smoking freely. How amazing would it be to light up on a stunning Thai beach or a beautiful Alpine meadow in southern Germany or Switzerland!
